1.1 Introduction

Transcript

Hello and welcome to Start in Surgery! Thank you for choosing to spend time with us and learn more about operating theatres. This course was created with the goal of helping UK students and allied health professionals who are new to the operating theatre. We understand that entering a new environment can be intimidating, and that much of the time during your first few weeks in theatre is spent trying to understand the layout and procedures rather than actively learning from the operation, and since the environment is so complex and high stakes, it’s rare to have someone really go through the ins and outs. That's where this course comes in! We will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the operating room, including the roles and responsibilities of the surgical team, the types of instruments and equipment you may encounter, and how to maintain a sterile environment. We will also cover the proper way to scrub in and assist in surgery, so that you can feel confident and competent in the operating room. Throughout this course, we aim to provide you with all the information you need to take your first steps in the operating room with that confidence. So, let's get started and learn everything you need to know about the operating theatre! We’ll start off with an introduction to your teachers for this course. My name is Simon Billingsley, and I am the founder of Start In Surgery. I am currently a foundation doctor in South Yorkshire, I studied at the University of Sheffield, and I am interested in pursuing a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics or Plastic Surgery. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Now that we've introduced ourselves, let's proceed to the first lesson.
